Why does my AI model suddenly not exist?

AI providers retire older model versions on dates they announce in advance, usually on a deprecations page and by email to the account owner. After the shutdown date, calls to that model fail with an error like model_not_found. Keep the model name in one setting, watch for deprecation notices, and test the replacement before the date.

Breaks at AI provider: Pinned model version was retired

Why AI tools write this bug

Generated code hard-codes the model name that was current when it was written, often in several files, and nothing re-checks it later.

How to fix it

Common questions

Should I use a 'latest' model alias?
It avoids shutdowns, but the model behind it can change without testing, which can change answers, formatting and price. Many teams pin a version and upgrade deliberately.
