What does Stripe 'No such customer' mean?
It means your code sent a customer id that doesn't exist for the key you used. Most often, the id was created in test mode and is now used with a live key: test and live mode keep completely separate customers, prices and subscriptions. Clear test-mode ids from your database when you go live, and keep test data separate.
Breaks at Stripe: Test-mode customer id used with a live key
Why AI tools write this bug
AI tools save the customer id on the user during testing, and nothing reminds you those ids belong to test mode when you swap in live keys.
How to fix it
- Check whether the failing id was made in test mode.
- Clear stored test customer and subscription ids.
- Use a separate database or project for testing.
- Set live price ids alongside the live keys.
Check your own app
Paste this into Lovable, Cursor or Claude Code:
Without changing anything, list where this project stores Stripe ids (customers, subscriptions, prices) and where each Stripe key and price id is configured per environment. Could a test-mode id stored in the database ever be used with a live key? How would I find and clear test ids?
Common questions
- Can I move test customers to live mode?
- No. Stripe doesn't copy data between modes. Live customers are created when people pay for real.
